With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about romantic desserts. I am a dark chocolate lover …
and I find the romance in this sweet ingredient somewhere between bite three and 12 of some rich and decadent dessert. While I can power through sugar-laden desserts just as well as the next gal, I try to keep my desserts on the healthy side. That’s right, even on holidays!
This chocolate mousse is made with simple, all-natural, healthy ingredients. Instead of using heavy cream and egg yolks for the base of the mousse, I used – just trust me on this one – avocado! It may sound strange, but avocado makes for a creamy, dreamy, thick mousse, and you can’t taste it past the chocolate!
Avocados are full of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are great for your brain, skin and digestive system. The healthy fat in avocados boosts your metabolism and helps you digest the essential vitamins and minerals in your food.
I used raw honey to sweeten the mousse. Honey has natural antibiotic and antiviral qualities, and is also lower on the glycemic index than cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup. In the realm of natural sweeteners, honey is arguably the best for you. Additionally, raw cacao powder is full of minerals and antioxidants. Combining these three superfoods – avocado, honey and cacao – means we’re left with a dessert that spans beyond the reaches of delicious; it’s also quite healthy for you!
All you do to prepare this healthy, decadent mousse is throw all of the ingredients in a food processor (or blender!) and process until completely smooth. Be sure to taste the mousse once you're finished blending, and add more honey or cacao powder to taste!
You can serve the mousse immediately, or transfer it to a sealed container and refrigerate it until you're ready to dive in. You can serve the chocolate mousse with whipped cream or shaved dark chocolate on top.
And that's it! Just a few minutes of prep time, and you're slated for a romantic evening, complete with a mouthwatering dessert!
- 2 large ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and halved
- ⅓ cup plus 1 Tbsp. raw honey
- ½ cup raw cacao powder
- ¼ cup plus 2 Tbsp. full-fat coconut milk
- ¼ tsp. vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp. sea salt
- Add all of the ingredients to a food processor (or blender) and process until completely smooth. You may need to stop the food processor a few times to scrape the sides to ensure everything gets blended.
- Serve immediately with whipped cream and/or shaved dark chocolate on top, or transfer to a sealable container and refrigerate until ready to consume.
